Hello, I am a book. Right now you are looking at me. You are reading me. I am happy when you read me.

Did I tell you about me?Well, here is my story.

Long ago people had no books. There was no writing at all. So they drew pictures to tell stories. Then Chinese people started to use picture-letters. About 3, 000 years ago, people in the West started to use an alphabet(字母表). With the letters and alphabet, people started writing. At that time, people wrote on a long piece of paper. They rolled(卷)it up and that became a kind of book.

Later someone put pieces of paper together and bound(装订)them, and I was born! But people had to spend a long time when they made a copy of a book with many pages. Then people cut letters on wood, and printing started.

About 750 years ago, Korean people made metal type for the first time.It was a big change in printing.About 550 years ago, Gutenberg, a German, made a printing machine. It was an important step in printing. After he made the machine, printing became very easy.Today libraries are full of books.

That is my story.I am here to help you study. So, please read me often, I am happy when you read me.

For most people, the word “fashion” means “clothes”. But people may ask the question, “What clothes are in fashion?” And they use the adjective “fashionable” in the same way:” She was wearing a fashionable coat.” “His shirt was really a fashionable colour.”

But of course there are fashions in many things, not only in clothes. There are fashions in holidays, in restaurants, in films and books. There are even fashions in school subjects, jobs… and in languages.

Fashions change as time goes. If you look at pictures of people or things from the past, you will see that fashions have always changed. An English house of 1750 was different from one of 1650. A fashionable man in 1780 looked very different from his grandson in 1860.

Today fashions change very quickly. Some of this is natural. We hear about things much more quickly than in the past. Newspapers, radios, telephones and television send information from one country to another in a few hours.

New fashions mean that people will buy new things, so you see there is money in fashion.
